What if you woke up one day to find out that the person you’re marrying is actually royalty… A modern-day prince? That’s exactly what happened to this woman. Twelve years ago, Ariana Austin went out to the Pearl Nightclub in Washington D.C. When Joel Makonnen spotted her, he racked his brain for his favorite cheesy pickup line.
He compared Austin and her friend to the most recent gin ad, according to the New York Times. Then, with nothing to lose, he added, “You’re going to be my girlfriend.” The line worked. And what happens next is one of the most inspiring real-life fairy tales we’ve heard in a long time…
She Met A Real-Life Prince… In A Nightclub
Turns out that Makonnen is the great grandson of Haile Selassie – the 225th in a line of Ethiopian emperors who ruled the country until a coup in 1974. That lineage traces all the way back to King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, according to another report from the Times.
But Austin didn’t fall in love with her prince because of his status. In fact, he didn’t reveal his royal ties until they were seriously involved with each other.
No one really expects to meet their future partner in a nightclub these days. But against all odds, Austin found a genuine prince charming. Move over, Prince Harry! Neither Austin, nor Makonnen wanted to rush into marriage. As ambitious people with strong career goals, each was dedicated to their own success at the time they met.
“I think we both had this feeling that this was our destiny,” she said. “But I felt like I had things that I had to do.” But when Makonnen did finally propose, it was about time.
The Royal Wedding
You don’t have to travel to Disney World to experience magic like this.
Austin and Makonnen said their vows in an Ethiopian Orthodox Christian ceremony at a Maryland church. More than 300 guests attended the wedding led by 13 priests and clergy. Some of those attendees were connected to the royal family.
They were both crowned during the wedding. The couple has plans to lay down their roots in Washington D.C.
