The 2020 election could throw in some interesting twists. But is there any actual chance of an Oprah Winfrey presidency?
After an applauded speech at the Golden Globes on Sunday night, talk quickly spread regarding the potential of Winfrey running in 2020.
Two sources close to the star told CNN that confidants have been encouraging her to run. One of them made it clear that Winfrey hasn’t yet mind her mind up about it. When questioned, one of Winfrey’s representatives did not respond to a request for comment.
Winfrey isn’t the only person whose name is circulating for a potential 2020 presidential campaign. The democratic race won’t begin until after the 2018 midterms, but there are plenty of candidates already making trips to Iowa to begin spurring the race.
After Winfrey accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes, an “Oprah for president?” quickly became the media’s most trending story.
In a night that centered around empowering women, Winfrey spoke about the #MeToo movement. “A new day is on the horizon” was the focus of her speech. Left-leaning audience members and liberal celebrities took the message as a potential sign of a 2020 campaign run. Social media exploded in a frenzy of wishful thinking from fans.
This isn’t the first time that Winfrey has been questioned about the potentiality of a presidential run. In the past, she’s deflected any inquiries that have come her way. But after President Trump entered office, the star acknowledged that the times have changed in terms of who can run for president.

Longtime Boyfriend Says Oprah Winfrey “Would Absolutely” Run for President
Winfrey’s longtime boyfriend, Stedman Graham, was quoted after he speech saying that a Winfrey run was certainly a possibility. “It’s up to the people,” he told a Los Angeles Times reported. “She would absolutely do it.”
In 2008, Winfrey campaigned for Obama. In 2017, she endorsed Hilary Clinton. When discussing the potential of a female president, Clinton said “America, it’s about time we made that decision.”
America did not make that decision, which is part of the reason that the speech on Sunday spurred such a response. When it comes to the value of a name, Oprah Winfrey is at tantamount as Donald Trump. As Reese Witherspoon said in her Golden Globes introduction, “there’s only one person whose name is a verb, an adjective, and a feeling. And that is Oprah.”
Despite her wealth and fame, Oprah does not possess political experience. Last march, David Rubenstein interviewed Winfrey and alluded to the subject. “It’s clear you don’t need government experience to be elected president of the United States,” he said.
Apparently, the thought had crossed her mind after Trump’s inauguration too. “I thought, ‘Oh gee, I don’t have the experience, I don’t know enough.’ And now I’m thinking, ‘Oh. Oh!” she responded. But she shot it down the last time the subject was brought up by her longtime best friend Gayle King. “There will be no running for office of any kind for me,” Winfrey said. What do you think?
