In a world where people constantly connect and share information online, how much trust is instilled in the companies we interact with? To find out, we conducted a series of surveys starting in January through March, and over 41,000 of you responded!
Do people generally feel safe when shopping online or when scrolling through their social media feeds? Each month, we gauged your degree of trust in various types of companies to protect and respect your data. Today, we’re sharing the results for our first three editions!
The study covers trust related to the following sources:
- Social media platforms
- Search engines
- Online retailers
- Financial institutions
- Media companies
- Market research firms
What We’ve Learned
Over the course of 3 months, trust across all categories has seen a small improvement — increasing on average by 4% since January. Trust in social media, however, still remains the lowest on the list.
Confidence in search engines, ranks slightly higher at 44%. This growth, however, is mostly fueled by those who “somewhat agree” that they trust search engines, leaving room for improvement here as well.
Although trust in media sites has risen to a slight majority (51%) over the course of three months, overall confidence in this source remains unclear. A significant 23% of you are uncertain about your trust, while 26% of you actively distrust media sites.
When we asked about your trust regarding market research firms, a majority of you (59%) expressed confidence that your personal information will be protected and handled with care. Trust in companies like Survey Junkie outnumbered overall trust in media companies, search engines, and social media platforms!
Most of you also reported feeling confident in online retailers (60%) — a number that has grown since our first survey in January.
It comes as a relief that trust in financial institutions ranks at the top of the list, considering they handle our most sensitive information. About 74% of you report confidence in financial institutions — a number that has remained stable since January.
We will continue to gauge how trust levels shift over time with our monthly surveys. Stay tuned for the next edition of the report, and thanks again to all who participated!
